You will usually find Dave Carswell out and about on the streets of Melbourne, leading his customers on an educational tour about its rich history and culture. But until recently Dave found himself spending less time pounding the pavement, and too much time sitting behind his desk!

Melbourne By Foot provides small and personable walking tours to those who wish to delve into the rich history and culture of the city. Dave loves meeting his eclectic customers and teaching those who are willing and interested in learning more about Melbourne. In fact, he loves it so much that it doesn’t even feel like work.

We were lucky enough to have a chat with Dave about his experience switching over to Rezdy.

Can you summarise three points of frustration you faced before you started to use Rezdy?

Can you summarise the points of frustration you faced before you started to use Rezdy?

  • With the booking system that I was using before Rezdy, I was unable to access it remotely, so it had to be from either a laptop or a computer - which as a sole trader and Owner Operator I found very frustrating. I do a lot of work on the go, so not being able to check availabilities and check bookings was one frustration.

  • A second was that the system that I was using didn't update things like availability live. With Rezdy I'm able to make amendments to bookings live - I can change start times, dates, and prices at the drop of a hat and it all updates straight away.

  • Third would be the system that I was using was really geared to accommodation, so it was not one that had focused on tours. So [with Rezdy] a lot of the smaller elements like promotional codes and things like that I'm able to access and use are really designed for tour operators like myself.

“I guess the booking system I was using wasn’t suited to tour operators, it was more for accommodation. It wasn’t user-friendly or intuitive, and I couldn’t access it remotely.”

Did you try to fix the problem in other ways before you settled on Rezdy?

I guess with the system that I was using previously, I had asked them whether they were going to be making changes to make their system easier to use for tourism operators - and whilst there had been talk and some promises made, there wasn't a lot of development that was happening with that.

And I could see that Rezdy was a new company that was interested, that was engaging with tour operators and finding out what they wanted, and making a system that was suitable for them.

Why did you choose Rezdy in the end?

Video Transcript:

So you chose Rezdy in the end to solve that problem, why did you choose Rezdy?

There was a couple of reasons:

  • First of all, it was recommended to me by another tourism operator whose opinion I trust.

  • Secondly, you're able to download and trial the system and I was able to see the functionality of it - how easy it was to use.

  • Another reason was partially financial as well, it was a set amount. The other booking system I was using worked as a percentage, which made it quite hard to factor into price - whereas with Rezdy it's a set amount so I know how much it's going to cost each month. So that was another big reason why I chose to go with Rezdy.

“I’ve actually been able to keep costs steady as my business has grown because Rezdy has a set amount that’s charged each month. The last booking system operated on a percentage of overall sales.”

What were your next steps? How did you implement Rezdy?

Once you chose Rezdy, what were your next steps? How did you implement the product?

I guess I needed to transfer over to the new booking system, which was Rezdy. I was able to update it quite easily offline with a lot of the information about my tours and what I needed to put in there. I do a lot of the web development myself so it was quite quick to point our 'book now' button over to our new Rezdy booking system. And once we cleared our banking system - a new merchant for online banking - to transfer over to Rezdy, it was a fairly quick and simple process.

What are the top three features you love about Rezdy?

What are the top three features you love about Rezdy?

  • I think one would be the layout from a backend perspective and also from a user perspective - it's very easy to look at and easy to navigate around. And for a customer you want an easy experience for them when it comes to booking your tour, and I think they definitely get that.

  • From the backend, it's easy for me to see week to week or month to month what tours I have operating, who's operating them, and when they need to go out.

  • I think the fact that Rezdy are quite proactive in implementing a lot of changes which have been recommended by users. So one thing I have used quite a bit of recently is things like promotional and discount vouchers. That's something I can customise and give out and use for promotional marketing as well. The fact that I can integrate it into my current booking system, and share a lot of the layout of my current webpage, and incorporate graphic designs and photos, also means that it looks professional, and it ties in with what I'm already promoting on my website.

“It allows me to provide a more professional approach when it comes to customising tours, like private and corporate tours. I can specify the terms and conditions, departure points, photos, for all those different products and tours.”

Did you experience any direct business benefits you can share with us?

I basically went from having no agent resales through to having that ability for other tourism operators and industry bodies to be able to sell my tours through their respective websites. So from that I've seen a huge increase - from zero to having a substantial amount of bookings that come through third parties like that.

What would you say to other businesses like yours who are thinking of trying Rezdy?

What would you say to other businesses like yours who are thinking of trying Rezdy?

I would say definitely give it a go. There's no harm in downloading a trial version and seeing for yourself how easy it is to use. I've always found as well that the staff have been very proactive and able to assist either on the telephone, through the internet, or on email as well.
