Ian Wells is the Owner and Chief Guide of Sydney Coast Walks, who offer walking tours through Sydney's national parks. 

With their in-depth knowledge of coastal areas, Ian and his team lead customers off the beaten track to lesser-known spots, illuminating the journey with tales of its history. We were lucky enough to tag along as Ian guided the South Head half-day walking tour.

After a couple hours of walking through beautiful views while learning about the extensive history of South Head, we had a chat with him about his experience switching over to Rezdy.



What frustrated you about your previous booking system?

Can you summarize three points of frustration that you faced with your old booking system.

  • It was really clunky whereas Rezdy is evolving with dynamic changes.
  • Marketing codes - as in promotional codes - were a bit annoying as well because we couldn't track them very well. We couldn't use them because we couldn't track the success of our marketing campaigns. 
  • Also because I'm on PC while my wife's on Mac, and it was a PC based system. You had to be on that particular PC to use it because it was software that sat on that PC, so that was frustrating as well.


What were the implications for your business if you hadn't managed to fix this problem?

What were the implications for your business if you hadn’t managed to fix that problem?

Huge. I mean you'll always be able to work around it, but it's just the amount of time you've got to put into it. Time is our biggest expense. Labour is our biggest expense. Time is valuable to us, so it's just the amount of time we had to put into managing our booking system. It was more of a manual process, and we had to be at our PC to process it all - we had to be at this one PC that had the software downloaded into it - so it would just take our time because you always had to be right there to do it, which was not great.



Did you try to fix the problem in any other way before you used Rezdy?

And did you try to fix the problem in any other way before you used Rezdy?

We'd gone back to our previous booking system software supplier and asked them if there were going to be any changes made and they said no. Maybe it wasn't no, but rather "we might look into it". But we go to Rezdy now with an idea and they say "great, if there's other people with the same idea we'll change things", and so, what do you know, Rezdy say "look, we've got this new thing". Not all of them are great for us, but a lot of them are because there's this dynamic. You're changing and you listen to the people who use the service. I think that's the big thing.



What are the top 3 features you like about Rezdy?

What are the top three features that you like about Rezdy?

  • Dynamic. Consistently and constantly changing to meet our needs. We come to Rezdy with an issue or a request and if enough people want the same thing as us, then it's implemented. I think that's amazing that we can actually input into how we want our booking software to work. That is absolutely awesome.
  • We can track the success of our marketing campaigns. We run lots of individual campaigns with different individual codes, so we can track them through those codes, which is amazing.
  • We can customise it to fit our business. We can have different Ts and Cs per product, and we can send emails out to our customers. We feel like Rezdy is our booking system, so if we can't do it we come to Rezdy and say "can this be done?", and invariably Rezdy come back and say "well we're going to do this". It might take a while, of course - they have to see the business benefit themselves - but Rezdy come back and say "this can now be done", and so we feel like we own a part of it, which is amazing.


Did you experience any direct business benefits from using Rezdy?

And did you experience any direct business benefits, like something measurable that you can share with us?

Just the time. It's saved us a lot of time. As I said earlier time is everything for a small business like us. We're a family owned and operated business, so for the two of us -  my wife and I - to have more time to create more business, to generate more business, and to make more money, is everything. And Rezdy allows us to do that. By being so efficient as a booking software, we have more time to work on other parts of our business, which is a big cost saver.



What would you say to other businesses in your sector thinking of trying Rezdy?

What would you say to other businesses in your sector thinking of trying Rezdy?

I would absolutely try it, particularly for tours. There's a lot of software out there for hotels and for property and accommodation, but it doesn't work as well as we need it to for tours, whereas Rezdy does - it's tour operator software, so I would absolutely recommend it. It's in the cloud too so you don't have to be linked to your PC to use it. It saved us a lot of time, it saved us a lot of hassle, and it's more accessible. It's a flat fee so you know what your monthly fees are going to be, it's not a percentage of business so you can budget for it better. I'd absolutely give it a go, it's a tour operator booking system. I'm sure it does other things as well but for our purposes, as a tour operator, it's perfect for us.
